2025 Speaker Series #2 Paris: A perspective on short- and long-term Economic Challenges, 12th May

News - Intro image
50 NetworkIrlande members and Embassy of Ireland, France guests gathered on Monday May 12th for the second event in the 2025 Speaker Series to welcome Mr. John McCarthy, Chief Economist in the Department of Finance in the Irish Government. John has responsibility for the provision of economic and budgetary analysis and forecasts and is currently the vice-chair of the OECD’s Economic Policy Committee and an adviser to the National Competitiveness and Productivity Council.

After an introduction by NetworkIrlande president Richard Dujardin and H.E. Niall Burgess, Ambassador of Ireland to France, John’s rich and informative presentation got everyone thinking. We looked back at Ireland’s recovery since the pandemic, looked ahead at emerging trends and causes for concern with regard to demographic shifts and of course, evaluated current uncertainty and learned about the Irish Government’s approach and preparedness. John brought us through figures for Ireland, the US, the EU and the UK and clarified tariff rates and impacts.

Questions from the floor looked to France’s approach, Ireland’s spending, impressive figures about Irish women’s integration in the workplace and much more. Discussions over drinks and canapes continued along these themes as new contacts and connections were made among the 50 attendees.

We are very grateful for the wonderful space and networking cocktail generously sponsored by our longstanding NetworkIrlande France Pioneer Member 74Software (formerly Axway) in their superb Avenue Kléber offices for this event.

The talk was recorded and we will shortly be sharing it with our NetworkIrlande members – once again, thank you to 74Software for looking after this.
