Visit by the Minister Ciaran Cannon 25 & 26 April 2018

The Minister of State for the Diaspora and International Development at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ciaran Cannon, T.D., visited Paris from 25-26 April

During a busy programme the Minister visited the Sorbonne where he announced the financing of a new research network on Irish studies.  At the Centre Culturel Irlandais he noted the importance of this strong Irish cultural message in what will soon be Ireland’s closest EU neighbour.  On the evening of the 25th April, Minister Cannon participated in the launch of the exhibition of 9 paintings from the NUI Galway collection entitled "Looking West" and loaned to the Embassy of Ireland for two years.

Later that evening, the Minister met the heads of the Irish associations including the President of Irish in France, the director of the Irish Cultural Centre, the president of An Gaeltacht sur Seine, the president of the Gaelic Football Federation, Father Hugh Connolly of the Irish Chaplaincy and the President of NetworkIrlande, Richard Dujardin and the Vice-President Terence McGivern.

He attended a working breakfast on the 26th April with Bord Bia and key Irish leaders in the food service industry in France.

The minister also met Tourism Ireland’s European office to discuss mutual support for Irish diaspora initiatives.

A meeting with Ireland’s ambassador to the OECD and UNESCO, Mr Dermot Nolan, concluded Minister Cannon’s visit to Paris.
