Lyon’s annual fêtes consulaires 23 et 24 June 2018

News - image_intro
Ambassador O’Brien, Honorary President of NetworkIrlande,  attended Lyon’s annual fêtes consulaires, an annual celebration for the consular corps in Lyon 23rd of June 2018

This year, 50 countries were represented, including 12 EU member states.  The EU and the Francophonie were also represented.  The launch comprised a short address by the dean of the consular corps in Lyon, as well as by the mayor of Lyon.  The mayor then visited each stand.  Ambassadors and other representatives of participating countries were also on stage while the mayor delivered his remarks.  The mayor then hosted a dinner for the senior representatives of each country taking part in the fêtes.  The fêtes were open to the public over two days.  The estimated number of visitors is put at 100,000.  The Irish stand provided an opportunity to make literature available from the state agencies, and some Irish food products, purchased locally at the Comptoir Irlandais.  A selection of artisan beers and whiskies were also available for tasting.  There was great interest in information about traveling to Ireland for holidays, as well as to learn English.  The stand was manned by volunteers from AFIL, (Association Franco Irlandaise de Lyon) who have an excellent rapport with their fellow Lyonnais, as well as demonstrating a deep knowledge of questions asked.

Our picture shows Mayor Képénékian, Ambassador O’Brien and Ireland’s honorary consul at Lyon, Bruno Boccard, raising a glass of Irish whiskey to the fêtes!
